To begin, I did not necessarily dislike this book, but it was missing something. Maybe some more outward emotion throughout. Maybe it was not my cup of tea...and fell a little flat for me in the middle. I'll be honest, at the end I wanted to throw my kindle...but that was before I knew the story continues. Somehow I initially thought it was a standalone! Whoops! Crisis everted! Anyway....

The book began quite intriguing and had me hooked pretty early on. Luna, the main character, had been plagued for years by selective amnesia, as stated late in the book. I think it may have been helpful if the diagnosis was mentioned early in the book, but it may be that I missed it. I was otherwise fascinated by Luna's assumed wakefulness and dream-states. You could decipher just enough when she would step out of reality and into this alternative consciousness as the edges of her vision would darken and become hazy. I like that it wasn't blatantly obvious. If it didn't happen that way, then she would might merely close her eyes and appear in another setting in different clothing, often during a different time of day. She had no knowledge of how she came to be there, but was accepting of it because she knew she had this affliction. As the story moves on, Luna befriends a woman from the coffee shop and two men. One man is the epitome of goodness and kindness while the other has a dark undertone to him. Enter: the love triangle. There are a few surprises and while I was pleasantly pleased with the near-end of the book, everything coming together and making sense, I was in a state of "what-the-what?" at the end! I want to say WHY I have an issue with the end in regards to her selective amnesia. What happened seemed very abrupt and didn't making sense with her slow progress through the book. It would give things away to talk about it so I digress.

kira knightly alone

For the record, will not give a low rating based off of being unhappy with the ending. Lot of people do that and that's not my style regardless of how I feel. I feel like basing a book off of the ending completely disregards the effort and quality of the writing as a whole. That being said, my lower rating has to do with the first 80% where I just wanted something more to happen. I'm not even sure what...I felt like the journey through the story was slow. I kept pep-talking myself to just keep going, something will happen at the end. Boy did it ever! But I needed something more through the book. I think what may have been an issue was that I was still trying to solve this man mystery...all of them. Adam, Sloan, the cigarette-shadow-man, and I was also trying to figure out the meaning behind Luna's selective amnesia. As a nurse I know what often causes it and had ideas. I was correct in the end, but I kept anticipating and waiting as I read. Anyway I'm rambling.

Kudos to the author for this complicated plot with complex characters. They were well described and personified. They were easily visualized as well as their experiences. I would recommend this book to others....but maybe after book two is ready!!! No throwing kindles of books in outrage! :)
Personally I will be reading book two!

GIVEAWAY

Synopsis

Peeking into the head of a writer is like opening the door to a room filled with lunatics, villains, and demons—all running amuck while screaming at exactly the same time. In other words, complete chaos. Most days, authors are able to quieten those voices in their head and focus on the ones who yell the loudest. They are able to clutch onto the hand of the most important character and pull them from the fray. But what happens when they’re all screaming much too loudly? What happens when they all speak at once and they pull the author into the depths of their fiery hell? Writer’s block, that’s what. Have you ever wondered why an author jumped into a different story while in the middle of a series you’ve been following or why they are taking too long to release or why they’ve gone genre hopping? Well, I’ll tell you why. They’re in hell. The hell of their own mind. In most cases, the writer will open new documents and tell portions of these character's stories if only to shut them up for a while. Other times, it’s because the author simply needs to feel useful or productive when their work in progress has come to a screeching halt. Regardless of the reason, you can ask just about any writer in this world and they’ll show you right to a folder on their desktop or a notebook of many scribblings of unfinished stories. This is our therapy. Our coping mechanism. And most days, as a reader, you’re only welcome into the world of our stunning, finished works of art we’ve spent months and months agonizing over. The beautiful final product of our blood, sweet, tears, and insanity. Nobody ever lets you in to see what wasn’t ever meant for the world. The imperfect. The incomplete. The utter madness. Nobody would ever share that with the world, right? Well, they’d have to be a little crazy. They’d have to be me. *** WARNING: This is a collection of incomplete stories. Some end abruptly, almost as quickly as they started. Others let you sink your teeth in just a bit before pushing you away. A couple will leave you pulling at your hair and cursing for more. In this collection, it’s all about beginnings…there are no climaxes or epic endings. It’s madness I tell you! Enter at your own risk.

Excerpt
Prologue
In moments like these, everything slowed. Salem always joked that it was life’s way of making sure you didn’t miss the turning points, the important bits. As if gravity sank heavier and heavier with the weight of the moment until the world was too heavy to turn and everyone held their breath. It certainly felt like that now. My next action, my next word, would change all of our lives. “Aria,” Clay’s deep voice reached my ears. “Whatever happens…I love you.” The usual assuredness and authority was gone. Instead, strain and hurt had crumpled up and shoved into his throat. Choose me. Save me. Love me. Before him my life had felt like a stack of old movies; frames missing or out of order, muted crackling sound, flickering and shuttering away, unloved and unseen in an old unused cinema. Then I found him. Or he found me. He created a warm shield around me where I could be safe. He coaxed away all my layers and shed all my masks and his love soaked right into my skin, right into the very soul of me. He pulled out the fossil buried inside that had been my heart and breathed life into me. How could I give up the man I loved? The one who loved me with a fierce and unwavering passion, the man who made me feel like I could defeat demons as long as he was by my side. Winking in the threads of sunlight piercing through the solemn gray clouds, seed fluff twirled about me like swirling, dancing couples. Spinning around like Salem and I used to do in our backyard, hands clasped together tightly, turning round and round, eyes to the sky, our twin voices giggling and floating into the air like dandelions. She had been my shield before Clay. “I’m nothing without you, Aria,” Salem’s voice trembled, desperation leaking into the breaths between her words. Choose me. Need me. Love me. How could I end her? I just got her back. For so long we shared almost everything, and she protected me. Her whole life had been about protecting me. Because she loved me that much. How could I turn against her, toss her away like an old broken toy? But I had to choose. I could see us now, the three of us making a chain like when I was a kid, folding pieces of colored paper into rectangles, cutting out an arm, a leg, and half a head, and unfurling my new patterns in the light to reveal a line of paper dolls. Clay, Salem and I − we were all just paper dolls in a paper chain, me in the middle, each end pulling tighter and tighter until something had to tear. Even now as I stare between Clay and Salem, trying to digest our impossible situation, Hope is still there, that terrible pixie, fluttering on my shoulder, whispering. Maybe it doesn’t have to end this way? Fuck you, Hope. Here’s the truth. Nobody is coming. No one will save us. And someone isn’t going to make it out of this forest today. “Choose,” my sister screamed. “It’s either him or me.” My fingers tightened around my gun in a reflex. This was it. I either ended her. Or destroyed Clay. I squeezed my eyelids shut for a moment, just for a moment of peace. Just for an instant I could shut out the inevitable, and in this blessed darkness I believed I could conceive a way that both could exist in my life. A way that I could choose Salem and Clay. You can’t have both. You tried. You. Can’t. Have. Both. Choose now. But how? What do you do when someone puts a gun to your head? Clay’s words came back to me, echoing as loud in my mind as if he had just spoken them. You refuse to bend. You push back. You find another way. You take that gun off him and put it back in his face. But you do not give in. Find another way… I knew what I had to do. A kind of peace settled on my skin, as delicate as gossamer, as light as silk. I opened my eyes to a world of bright light until my vision adjusted. The torn and pained faces of the two people I loved came into focus. The only two people I’ve shared air with while we slept, the same two people I’d crawl into Hell to be with, and the only two people I would die for. I forced the ghost of a smile forward. And turned the gun on myself.

I knew he was about to leave for a year – no chance for a future. But our one night together would create memories for a lifetime. Our paths crossed again, but I had lied, and he was no longer the man he once was. He was warring against demons. Against the silence that was threatening to swallow him. And I had kept a secret from him, one he would never forgive me for. But my secret was about to be ripped open. Displayed for the world on national news. And I had only one way to repair the damage. Evading by K.L. Kreig is LIVE! Sink your teeth into this sexy read!

Evading

“Let me obliterate each and every last beast that’s holding that beautiful mind captive, Giselle.”

It’s no secret Detective Mike Thatcher wasn’t a fan of the blood drinkers. They stole his life, his woman, his future when they kidnapped his college sweetheart. So of course Fate paired him with the one thing he’d spent the past eleven years hating…a vampire. But Giselle isn't just any vampire. She’s seduction, sin, strength and fragility all wrapped into one ice-cold package.

“That could take a lot of time. I have a lot of demons.”

Giselle has reasons for her sandpaper exterior, but they’re hers and hers alone. Then along came the one male she never wanted. Her Fated. Mike changed her in ways she didn’t like. He made her soft. He made her care. The gorgeous asshole made her feel, goddammit. And he’s just made it clear the running is over. Letting love in would prove to be the biggest challenge she’d ever faced.

But as Mike lets the past go, can Giselle do the same? Can she bare her soul? Show her shame? Just as Giselle stops fighting the inevitable, her entire world doesn’t only shift on its axis…it falls the fuck off.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE! In order to fully enjoy Mike and Giselle's full story, you must start with the first book in the Regent Vampire Lords series, Surrendering, as their back story unfolds throughout the previous three books.

**** Warning: Hot sex, foul language ahead. Meant for mature audiences only 18+
