“Don’t be ridiculous, Leonard. Of course I’m getting the door. What? You think a robber’s going to waste his time at the old people’s home?”

“Of course not, Charlotte. Get back in bed. Who would possibly be at the door at this hour other than a robber?” Leonard hissed at her, trying to yank her arm. He didn’t have his glasses on, so he didn’t even make contact with her.

Charlotte shook her head at the silly man.

“I’ll take my chances,” she whispered as he groaned and got out of bed.

“If we end up tied up it’s because of you,” he grumbled, rubbing sleep from his eyes. The pounding continued as Charlotte grabbed her glasses from the nightstand on her way from the room.

“Coming,” she yelled.

“Great, now the robber knows we’re here.” Leonard sighed, following closely behind.

“You’ve been watching too much Dateline.” As she crossed the kitchen and put her hand on the doorknob, she begrudgingly paused. She couldn’t admit Leonard was right. Peering at the clock on the stove, she realized it was 11:06 p.m. Probably not the smartest time to open your door. But she was committed now and couldn’t admit she had the creeps, not with Leonard right there ready to say told you so. So Charlotte flung the door to the right, and waited to face her attacker.

The sight in front of her eyes in the darkened hallway was both glorious and terrifying.

Amelia stood in sweatpants and a hoodie, tears streaming down her face. Her hair was a frizzy mess and her eyes were bloodshot.

“Grandma, I’m so sorry. My flight just got in and I was going to wait to see you until tomorrow but I just needed to talk. Oh my gosh, you were sleeping. I’m an idiot.”

Charlotte was horrified by the potential reason behind Amelia’s sudden visit. She was supposed to be in Amsterdam right now. She wasn’t due home until Thanksgiving.

An high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay's the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay's goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she's done her job.

Lindsay's hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Excerpt

He wasn’t looking at me any more. I wasn’t even sure he was really in the room.

I needed to leave this alone. He had given me the clues—looking away, his jaw clenching, pain like I’d never heard from him sounding loud and clear. My instincts were telling me to shut up, but I couldn’t. I had this burning need to know more about Caden. I needed to get in there, past his walls, and I wanted to understand him.

I wanted to help him.

Caden was hurting, and I wanted to take that away.

“What happened?”

Caden turned his gaze to me now, and I felt branded by the pain I saw. His eyes were stricken. “Does it matter?”

“No.” My breath caught and held in my chest. I wanted to go to him, but I also wanted to slink away. I was stirring up his pain, but I had to know. “What happened, Caden?”

“Why do you have to know?”

“Because it’s hurting you.”

I made a decision, though I had no idea what the ramifications were going to be. I stood, my legs going numb and my stomach clenching, and I moved to his side. He leaned back, his head falling to the couch, and he watched me.

The need to ease some of his hurt outweighed the fear of what would happen next. Swallowing tightly, I stepped over to straddle him and sat down.

“What are you doing?”

He asked that softly, still holding his beer. I took it from his hands and put it on the stand next to the couch. Then I just sat there. He had to do the rest. I’d already made the first move.

I glanced down at his hands, feeling like an idiot. “What happened?”

“Why are you pushing this?”

I looked back up to find confusion warring with need in his eyes. He wasn’t pushing me away, so I sank further into his lap.

“You haven’t told anyone else about this.” It wasn’t really a question, but I saw the confirmation in his eyes. My chest tightened, thinking about whatever secret he held. “Please tell me.”

“No.” He shifted forward, and I braced myself, expecting him to push me away. He didn’t. His hands grasped the backs of my legs and lifted me so I was more fully on his lap.

I could feel him between my legs, and my breasts almost pressed against his chest. I waited. I wanted to see what else he’d say

“But not because I don’t want you to know,” he added. “Because it’s not my secret to tell.”

I nodded, my stomach doing somersaults now. “That makes sense. I can respect that.”

And there we were. His hands cupped my ass, and the pain in his gaze became something darker, something I felt too, something that began to turn off all rational thought.

“What are we doing here?” he questioned, his voice like a caress in itself.

I leaned forward, my gaze lingering on his lips. “I didn’t really think it through.”

“And now?”

“Still not thinking it through.”

“You’re okay with that?”

In that moment, the truth exploded in me. I wanted him. I wanted this—but it was more. I needed this.

I didn’t answer.

I closed the distance between us.

Author Information
tijan bio.jpeg

I didn't begin writing until after undergraduate college. There'd been storylines and characters in my head all my life, but it came to a boiling point one day and I HAD to get them out of me. So the computer was booted up and I FINALLY felt it click. Writing is what I needed to do. After that, I had to teach myself how to write. I can't blame my teachers for not teaching me all those years in school. It was my fault. I was one of the students that was wishing I was anywhere but at school! So after that day, it took me lots of work until I was able to put together something that resembled a novel. I'm hoping I got it right since someone must be reading this profile! And I hope you keep enjoying my future stories.

Standalone Novel

Review by Becky Grover
5 of 5 stars

Oh my gosh, y'all! This has got to be one of my top favorite NA/college romance books yet! Tijan does a fabulous job with encompassing all of those angsty feels, drama, and insecurities we experience as we come into ourselves in our young adult years.

I love how quirky and random Summer is, and that after she becomes comfortable around her new friends in college, she doesn't try to be anyone but herself. She knows she is a bit socially awkward and doesn't try to tamp in down.

Caden, a frat brother to Summer's stepbrother, keeps running into her, which eventually evolves into a friendship. Caden is the epitome of hot, people. All of these characters are really well personified, but let me tell you, his description, nuances and personality, draw such a gorgeous picture of him... he just sticks with you. And the hesitancy to not get too close to each other on both their parts is so delicious.

You will really be pulled in as you experience Summer's turmoil as she sorts through all of her feelings regarding her stepbrother, her new friends and their drama, her undefined relationship with Caden, as well as dealing with the death of her mother, which she has yet to truly face.
Caden has some serious family issues that he is also dealing with on his own... A family tragedy that has had an ongoing effect on him and has changed his life.

Will Summer and Caden be able to lean on each other and help each other through their troubles? Or will fear of opening up and sharing their baggage come between them?

I highly recommend this book! It will not disappoint! I just could not put it down from start to finish!

TIJAN, if you're reading this, I put in my plea for a book on Caden's brother Colton! Oh, please!! OMG, the angsty and emotional potential there....

I'm not going to apologize for how gushy this review is going to be because I love Tijan's books every single one and this just gets added to the ever growing list. If you're cringing at the thought of yet another step brother romance then stop, because this is a completely different take on that genre. Yes, we have Kevin the arrogant step brother who is a complete idiot but we have Caden and he more than makes up for the idiot oh and he's mine!
We have the parties, the bitchy girls, the sports references, but we get Caden and Summer. She's hilarious, vulnerable, and you'll want to hug her as much as you want to shake her. That chemistry between the two is palpable and I loved the slowly developing relationship between them. There are several stories running through the book, the main themes of loss, grieving and forgiveness are all dealt with beautifully. Brilliant story, great characters and as always sublime writing.

This book was my first from this author and I loved it! She knows how to throw so many emotions into a story. You truly feel like you are there or even one of the characters. They are very relatable to when we were at that age where emotions were confusing. Summer doesn't know what her emotions are telling her. She has a lot to deal with and let her true self come out and shine. I love how she develops throughout the story and becomes a strong person. Caden is the perfect blend of what you want in a guy. They develop a friendship and find that they both have things that they have to deal with in life. Will Summer figure out who she has true feeling for? Her step brother or the guy who has became her friend? The angst in this book is so real that your own emotions are up and down throughout the whole book. I loved this book from start to finish. I look forward to more books from this author. *Reviewed for Sweet Spot Sisterhood* ~~~~~~~~

Review by Sam Lewis

Anti-Stepbrother......what does that even mean? I was intrigued by the title. (And the cover too. That guy is smoking HOT!!!)
**This ARC was received in exchange for an honest review. I am reviewing this book for Sweet Spot Sisterhood Blog. This may contain a couple background spoilers. Read with this in mind.
I should have known by the title this wasn't the typical taboo stepbrother romance. I don't want to give too much away, though. In high school Summer was in love with Kevin Matthews. Just like every other high school girl. Kevin was popular and good-looking. As fate would have it, Summer's mom died after a battle with cancer and her dad soon moved on with the nurse that had helped take care of her. They soon got married and the two families joined. Summer and her father moved in with Sheila and her son. Sheila's son happened to be Kevin. Yes, that Kevin. The Kevin Matthews was now her stepbrother. She was now living under the same roof as her high school crush.

I have to be honest, I was about 20% in before I became hooked on this book. The book starts with Kevin off at college and Summer looking for him at his frat house a few days before she is to start her freshman year at the same college Kevin is attending. She finds him in the arms of another girl in the frat's basement and this throws her into flashbacks. A moan brings her back to the present and she leaves the basement. Summer starts reminiscing when Kevin came back home for her high school graduation. The night everything changed. Flirting led to kissing. Kissing led to touching. Touching led to sex. Yep, you heard me right. Kevin and Summer had SEX! Then they fell in love and lived happily ever after? Nope, not even close. You will have to definitely one click this fantastic book by Tijan to find out what happens between Summer and Kevin while they are off at college together. This book could easily be read in one sitting. That is how good it is!

Emma knew it was crazy—it was impossible to forget what she had shared with Calisto Donati. All their love, the stolen moments, their foulness together, and the beauty underneath it all were real. They were real. But he didn’t know. He didn’t know any of it. And little by little, with every day that passed her by, Emma found she was losing those pieces that reminded her they had existed once. Just like the rosary. All too soon, Emma knew … there would be nothing left. Calisto Donati Emma hadn’t given him a choice. Her, not him. Yeah, that’s what Calisto was going to keep telling himself. He refused to feed into the strange curiosity he had about Emma Donati. It had been building from the moment he’d first seen her face after he’d awakened. He wouldn’t admit that for longer than he cared to admit, he thought there was more behind her false smile, polite words, and the distance she put between her and him—that there might be more to them. He couldn’t. Except … he was feeding into it. Calisto just wasn’t sure what it was. But tonight he was going to find out. Whether she wanted to tell him or not.

EXCERPT

“Please, just wait a moment,” Father Day begged. “Talk to me a little while longer. Let me help you, Calisto.” The priest grabbed Calisto’s arm in an attempt to stop him. It barely fazed him at all when he shrugged the man off and continued storming down the aisle. “You’re too angry, Calisto!” Words were meaningless. Unimportant, even. In his current state—so enraged, confused, and hurting—he didn’t hear them. Calisto didn’t want to. “Don’t you remember the last time you were this angry?” the priest called after him. He did, but it didn’t make a difference. Calisto flew out of the church and into damp air. He cut through the rain, ignoring the splattering droplets falling from the black sky. Maybe he shouldn’t have ignored it. Weren’t black skies omens of sorts? Before long, Calisto was inside his car and driving down the interstate. Toward where, he didn’t know. But driving felt good—damn good. He pressed the pedal harder. He gripped the wheel tighter. Faster, until the engine roared and gears protested on the last shift. Rain blurred the windshield, but Calisto’s focus was far beyond the squiggly lines running down the glass before the wipers swiped them away. There was so much agony in his heart, and something akin to betrayal sewing itself into the very marrow of his bones. Somehow, he just knew … He had done this to himself. His car flew past vehicle after vehicle on the interstate. He couldn’t even find it in himself to give a shit about the speed limit, or that he could feel the car loosing traction under his control. Tires slipped. He hit the pedal harder, and kept the car straight. Driving was his one sense of freedom. Wasn’t that what he said? Wasn’t that what he told— Calisto’s gaze caught sight of a black SUV in his rear-view mirror, bringing him out of the hell that was his mind. For a moment, he didn’t begrudge the reprieve it afforded him. But it was a mistake to look. The second he stared into the rear-view mirror, high beams flashed on from the SUV behind him, blinding his vision instantly. He was driving far too fast for someone to be following him as closely as that vehicle currently was. It wasn’t accidental, he realized. It was purposeful. Calisto’s reaction time was off just by a fraction of a breath as he regained focus on the road ahead of him. Suddenly, it seemed like the dark interstate was empty, but for his car and that SUV just inches from his bumper. He missed his exit because of the distraction. “Shit,” he muttered. Another one was coming, but not for another ten miles or so. His right hand itched to leave the wheel, wanting to reach out to the side and grab his phone, and make just one call to the only person who mattered to him. He didn’t dare loosen his grip. Even the stars were hiding in the sky. He glanced into the mirror again, careful to avoid the direct glare of the high beams, and quickly noted how the SUV swerved to the left as if they were going to pass him. There was no room to pass with him being in the left lane as it was. But the action of the SUV swerving was enough to make Calisto react out of nothing but instinct as he forced his own car to the right. Maybe it was a little bit of hope, too. Hope that whoever was behind him was no one he knew. Hope that whoever it was might be just another angry, stupid fool like him that was driving too fast on a rainy, dark night. Calisto’s hope didn’t last long. He felt the tires slip on the slick pavement as he slid into the right-side lane. There was no stopping the unmistakable twist of the rear-end when his car began to slide sideways. No matter how hard he pushed the pedal or straightened the wheel to bring his car out of the beginning of a tailspin, he couldn’t do it. He had already lost control. Suddenly, time slowed. It seemed appropriate. Calisto had just a few seconds of suspended breath and waiting to reflect over his time and choices. There was no flash of life before his eyes—just the knowledge that he had been a part of this world once, and that in itself was a mark left behind. But he was still sorry. It was the sight of black to his left that made Calisto turn his head. His car was almost halfway turned as the SUV came to pass at his side. Hope left as the passenger window rolled down. Through the squiggly lines of water running down his window, Calisto could only see black staring back at him. Black and a flash of brushed silver. The plume of light was instant, and shocking. In the background, he caught a glimpse of the profile of the person shooting at him, but he was already reacting. Calisto jerked the wheel of his car at the same time, forcing his car into a harder, faster spin that would probably turn his car over. He heard the bullet shatter glass a second before the roof of his car met pavement. He wasn’t buckled in. His shoulder hit the door, his leg crunched under a snapping wheel, and his head hit metal. Calisto’s night turned even blacker.

Synopsis

Calisto Donati

She was just a woman. That’s what Calisto wanted to tell himself; that’s what he wanted to believe. Emma was nothing more than a woman. There were other women for him to want. To obsess over. It couldn’t be Emma Sorrento. Not for Calisto. She was taken. She was claimed. She was not his. In a few days, Calisto would hand her off, and that would be that. He wondered why it wouldn’t be that easy to let her go. What good had saving her done? He had simply taken her from one monster to give her to another.

Emma Sorrento

Emma slid on her mask. All someone would need to do was look close enough to see what was really beneath the sheer falseness of her smile. At the other end of the table, Emma found her lies staring her right in the face. He smirked. And winked. Calisto Donati was her worst mistake, her greatest shame, and the one thing she still wanted more than anything. Emma could still feel him all over her, long after his touch and kiss was gone. In thirty days, her entire world had changed—he had changed her. Emma had a feeling that if she played another game with Calisto, she would surely lose. She had already lost once. Wasn’t it enough?

Synopsis

Calisto Donati

Calisto had never been a fan of pain, but he found it provided a certain relief. It was a high that couldn’t compete with anything else he experienced. That was why he fought bare-knuckled, why he drove fast, despite knowing he might crash, and why he still enjoyed looking at Emma Donati—no matter her current status. Pain felt good. He might have been a fool for doing so, but as long as he got what he wanted from it, he didn’t really care. When he fought, he was given release. When he drove, he was given freedom. When he looked at Emma, he was given memories. All of them brought a certain level of pain. All three might kill him someday. Calisto glanced at Emma, taking her in again when she didn’t know he was looking. He realized then that only one might actually be worth dying for.

Emma Donati

Emma kept her gaze on the book in her lap, pretending like there wasn’t an argument going on across the room. She had become terribly good at acting like she didn’t hear. Calisto watched her out of the corner of his eye while he argued on with Affonso. She was too focused on Calisto to care about their fight. His anger. The tightness of his jaw. Searing soul-black eyes. The two men were not the same. They might have shared blood, but their hearts were entirely different. One man never let her out of his sight when he was nearby. The other acted like she didn’t exist. This was what it was like, she realized, to be in love with someone she couldn’t have. Calisto Donati would never be hers. This wasn’t a fairy tale that would end happily. They weren’t star-crossed. They were impossible.
