NEIGHBOR DEAREST

(A standalone)

Release date: 8/15/2016

A Contemporary Romance Novel

New York Times, USA Today and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Penelope Ward

***
Blurb

A STANDALONE NOVEL that does NOT need to be read in conjunction with any other book.

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a friends-to-lovers story with sexy new characters.

After getting dumped, the last thing I needed was to move next door to someone who reminded me of my ex-boyfriend, Elec.

Damien was a hotter version of my ex.

The neighbor I’d dubbed “Angry Artist” also had two massive dogs that kept me up with their barking.

He wanted nothing to do with me. Or so I thought until one night I heard laughter coming through an apparent hole in my bedroom wall.

Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist.

The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities.

We got to talking.

He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup.

He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more.

Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

I thought my heart had been broken by Elec, but it was alive and beating harder than ever for Damien.

I just hoped he wouldn’t shatter it for good.

Author's note – Neighbor Dearest is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

CHAPTER ONE

SUPERSONIC HEARING

My little sister is such a drama queen. Literally. Jade is an actress on Broadway.

She clapped her hands together, applauding the students who’d just bravely put themselves out there to try out for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “You all did such a great job today! Tomorrow we cast the roles and start our first rehearsal. This is gonna be epic!”

Jade had come out to the Bay Area to visit our family for the week and offered to volunteer at the youth center where I worked. Since there wasn’t enough time to produce an entire play, Jade decided to direct the kids in one key scene from the musical that would be performed later in the week.

I loved my job as director of the arts at the Mission Youth Center. It was just about the only thing going right in my life. The only downside was the fact that these walls were haunted by memories of my ex, Elec, who used to be a youth counselor here. That was how we met. He’d loved his job, too, until he quit so that he could move to New York after we broke up. He moved to be with her. I shook my head to shoo away thoughts of him and Greta.

Jade grabbed her purse. “I need to go back to your place to use the bathroom and have a quick bite.”

I’d just moved into a new apartment that was only a few blocks away from my job. The lease had finally run out on the place I’d been renting with Elec across town. Even though my ex sent me his half of the rent for the remainder of our lease after he’d moved out, I couldn’t wait to vacate that place; every corner of it reminded me of him and of the miserable months that followed our break up.

My place was right in the south central section of the Mission District. I loved the culture in my new neighborhood. Produce bins and a variety of cafes lined the streets. It was also a mecca for Latin culture, which was great, except for the fact that it reminded me of Elec, who was half Ecuadorian. Little reminders of the guy who broke my heart were everywhere.

Jade and I strolled down the sidewalk, stopping at a fruit stand so that she could buy some papayas for an afternoon smoothie she planned to make back at my apartment. We also ended up getting two coffees to go.

I bent back the opening on my coffee lid as we walked. “So, little sis, I never thought we would be in the same predicament at the same time.”

Jade had recently been dumped by her musician boyfriend.

“Yes. But the difference is, I feel like I have way more distractions in my life than you do. It’s not that I don’t think about Justin. It’s not that I don’t get sad, but my performances keep me so busy that it’s almost like I don’t have time to wallow in it, you know?”

“I told you I’ve been doing these phone therapy sessions, right?”

Jade took a sip then shook her head. “No.”

“Yeah. I found this psychologist who specializes in trauma from failed relationships, but she’s in Canada. Anyway, we do phone sessions one night a week.”

“Is it helping?”

“It always helps to talk things out.”

“Yeah. But no offense, you don’t seem any better for it. Anyway, you can talk things out with Claire or me. You don’t need to pay big bucks to talk to a stranger.”

“Nighttime is really my only time to talk to anyone. You’re performing at night, and Claire is too wrapped up in being a blissful newlywed. Besides, she’s never had her heart broken. She listens, but she doesn’t get it.”

Our older sister, Claire, married her high school sweetheart. Even though the three of us were close growing up in nearby Sausalito, I’d always felt more comfortable opening up to Jade.

When we arrived at my building, my sister stopped to sit on one of the benches in the corner of the fenced-in courtyard. “Let’s sit for a bit, finish our coffees.” Her gaze wandered across the grass to my shirtless neighbor. “Okay…who’s the hottie in the beanie defacing the property?”

“What is it with you and beanies?”

“Justin used to wear one. That’s why I love them. Isn’t that sad?”

“That is sad.”

“This from the girl who still sleeps in her ex’s shirt.”

“It’s comfortable. It has nothing to do with Elec,” I lied. It was the one thing I allowed myself from him. It made me sad, but I wore it anyway.

“So…who is that guy?”

I didn’t know my neighbor’s name, but I’d see him once in a while doing spray paint art along the wrap-around concrete wall that surrounded the property. It served as a vast canvas. His spray painting was true art, definitely not what would be considered simple graffiti. It was an elaborate mix of celestial and geographical images. This guy just kept adding different artwork to the wall gradually. It was a work in progress. I could only assume he planned to paint the entire circumference of the property, as much as the wall space would allow.

“He lives in the building, next door to me, actually.”

“What is he doing? They allow him to do that here?”

“I don’t know. The first time I saw him out here, I thought he was vandalizing the property. But no one seems to care or stop him. Every day, he adds to the mural. It’s actually quite beautiful. But it doesn’t match his personality.”

Jade blew on her coffee. “What do you mean?”

“He’s not very nice.”

“You’ve talked to him?”

“No. He’s just not friendly. I’ve tried to make eye contact, but he walks right by me. He has these two big dogs, and they’re pretty mean. They bark all of the time. He walks them every morning.”

“Maybe he’s like a savant. You know, really good with art. Or maybe he’s a genius but with limited social skills. What do they call that…Asperger’s?”

“No. He communicates just fine. I’ve seen him yelling at a few people. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have that. This guy is just not friendly. He doesn’t have Asperger’s. He’s just an ass.”

Jade chuckled. “I think you should totally stop by his place with some warm muffins wrapped up in a basket. It’s the neighborly thing to do. Maybe he’ll loosen up…or loosen you up.”

“Muffins, huh? What’s that code for?”

“Muff…muffins. Same thing. If I lived here, I’d be all over that. But I don’t live here. You do. And you totally need a distraction. I say…he’s it.”

I admired the guy’s broad shoulders and tanned muscular back as his arm moved the spray can up and down. “God, doesn’t he remind you of Elec, though? Arm tattoo…dark hair. Artistic. Basically, that’s the last type of guy I’m going for at this point.”

“So, if someone looks like or seems similar to Elec, then they’re automatically disqualified? They’re destined to do the same thing Elec did? Is that how you think? That’s just stupid rationale.”

“Maybe that’s fucked-up. But the last thing I want is to be with someone who reminds me of him in the least.”

“Well, that’s a shame, because Elec was freaking hot, and this guy…is even hotter.”

“Can you remind me why we’re discussing this? The dude doesn’t even say hello to me. He’s not signing up to be on this delusional version of The Bachelorette. He’s not interested.”

Neighbor Dearest suddenly wiped the sweat from his forehead, took off the mask covering his nose and mouth, and dumped the spray cans into a black drawstring sack. He slung it over his shoulder and just when I thought he was going to walk away and out of the courtyard, he began to walk in our direction. Jade straightened in her seat, and I hated that my pulse raced a bit.

His eyes were focused on me. I wouldn’t call it an angry stare, but he wasn’t smiling. The sunlight beamed directly into his blue eyes, which glowed and really stood out against his tan skin. Jade was right; this guy was truly gorgeous.

“Blueberry are my favorite,” he said.

“What?”

“Muffins.”

“Oh.”

Jade snorted but stayed silent, letting me take the brunt of this humiliation.

“And I’m not anti-social or a savant. I’m just a good old-fashioned prick…with supersonic hearing.”

He smirked and walked away before I could say anything.

When he was safely out of earshot—for real this time—Jade sighed. “Angry guys are the best in bed.”

“You just can’t stop yourself, can you? Haven’t you done enough damage? I’ve always told you that you’re loud when you think you’re whispering. Now there’s proof…at my expense.”

“You’ll be thanking me later when you’re screaming out in orgasm as the angry artist is Van Goh-ing down on you.”

“You’re crazy.”

“That’s why you love me.”

“It is.”

BLURB

Tick tock. One day before the wedding of her dreams, Penny is in a city that is no longer her home. Alone. Heartbroken. Lost. Could the past few years really mean so little to a man that became her world? To a man she'd do anything to protect? There is no future without him. There is no her without him.

With only 24 hours until the wedding, is there enough time to repair the damage? Tick tock.

And even if Penny and James do come back to each other, Isabella is still out there plotting. The world is still against them. Darkness still lurks in the shadows of James' past. A student and her professor were never meant to be forever. They thought it was an everlasting love, but it was doomed from the very start. Tick tock.

Temptation led to addiction, which exploded into an eruption of chaos. And when the pieces settled, only one thing became clear...devotion. One great love. A love worth fighting for. Because the only thing that lasts forever is love.

Note from the Author:

Devotion is finally up for pre-order!

I know you've been wondering when Devotion (The Hunted Series Book 4) will be released. I kept delaying the answer because, if I'm being honest, Devotion has been a struggle for me to write. Not because I don't know what needs to happen - I've always known how their love story will end. I'm just not ready to let these characters go! When I write the last word of this book, that's it...their story is done. This series has seriously become my baby. I've put my heart and soul into Penny and James' story. And I hope that you love them as much as I do.

I'm already planning spin-offs featuring Tyler and Brendan and some characters you'll be meeting in Devotion... which will still allow me to show glimpses of Penny and James in the future. So if you're terribly upset, albeit excited, for Devotion at least you'll know Penny and James won't just disappear :)

Okay, enough rambling. What I'm trying to say is that I finally have a release date! Devotion will be released on October 27th. Everyone's new favorite day of the year, of course! And Devotion is now available for pre-order, for anyone who wants it to magically appear on their kindle on October 27th and jump right in.

I know it's a bit of a wait for the release, but I promise it'll be worth it. I'll even venture to say that the conclusion is epic :) I couldn't possibly end their story any other way.

Another outstanding book by Winter Travers! After book one, Downshift, I couldn't wait until we got this book! These brothers with their rough exteriors and super soft hearts will melt you into a puddle of goo.... a HOT puddle of goo!

Scarlett encounters Mitch at one of the lowest points in her life. She has left an abusive relationship and run far away with her little boy, Levi, to start over with a new life. Only her vehicle breaks down close to the Skid Row Kings shop. This is where they meet and she is understandably timid and hesitant to allow Mitch to help her. She is okay with him working on her car, but she feels the only reason a man wants to get involved and help as much as Mitch wants to is to expect something in return.

Scarlet has preconceived notions about Mitch and his family and how they compare to her and the point she is at in her life. They couldn't possibly understand her struggle and need to make it on her own. She continually pushes him away while he tries to get involved and help her. He knows all too well what it was like to be in her position and how hard it is to climb your way out to a better life.

How will Mitch convince her that he really has her best interests at heart? How does he deal with her pushing him away and trying to avoid him?

I really enjoyed the push-pull of this story and the inner-workings of a realistically building relationship with real life issues. That's my favorite thing about this series. It is not insta-love, and there are always real issues at hand that the characters have to work through and grow from. I really love getting to know this family more and more with each book!

At one of the hardest times in her life, Scarlett and her son meet Mitch. When you know her backstory you can understand why she's wary and unwilling to accept help. I really admired her for not taking the easy way out, she's determined to make a better life for her and Levi.
From the start, you can tell Mitch is protective of them both, he's not too over the top and knows not to push her boundaries too fast. I loved the slow build of the relationship the three of them form and with the introduction of the other guys you can feel the family this group is building. Mitch is a great character like his brothers and he knows what hardship is like and wants to help people whenever he can. Levi is the cutest kid who soaks up every piece of love that Mitch and his family give him. I loved watching him blossom with the guys. Scarlett is a fantastic mum who has been through hell and is slowly coming back to life but will Mitch be part of their future?
Bring on book 3 because after that ending I can't wait!

I loved so much about this book! The book overall felt very real and believable. There were no outlandish characters or bazaar ideals. I've been deep in the reading trenches of dark and twisted romance for a while so it felt nice to read something that is more low-key and "real life." That being said, there were still plenty of feels and action. There was just enough subject matter regarding the auto racing and its community to explain what was going on and peak your interest, but not so much that it would take away from the budding relationships. The characters were well fleshed-out and their personalities were solid and stayed true to each throughout.

Our heroine, Violet, is one to primarily keep to herself. She is a book-loving librarian that lives on a very tight budget. She carries herself well, dresses nicely, yet modestly for work, and comes home to a quiet, low-budget apartment. She had a rough childhood in regards to how she was treated in school, and lived in a low-income tiny apartment with her loving parents.

Luke and his siblings grew up on the "wrong side of the tracks," Skid Row. Luke is the oldest of his siblings and worked hard to become successful enough to make something of himself outside of that disparaging community. With the sudden loss of both parents, it fell on Luke's shoulders to resume responsibility for his 14-year-old sister. All living together, three grown men and their young sister, they struggle to find a "new normal" while coping with their loss.

I love the yes, no, maybe beginning that Violet and Luke share when they first meet. There is a physical attraction but not an immediate fondness by any means. Violet's car troubles sort of forces the two to spend a little time together and a relationship starts to form as they get to know more about each other. However, presumptions and judgements get in the way and the couple runs into trouble. There are some analogies in the writing between the relationships and the racing. At least I see it that way. Luke is a risk taker, though not the reckless sort. Violet is one to feel safe in her bubble, not attracting attention to herself, and certainly not taking risks. I saw that in certain scenes such as:

"'Well, I'll just have to call you [Vi] more often. You ready to go for that ride now, Vi?' I glanced over, her hand gripping the armrest and the other one clenched in her lap.

'Um, I guess, but do we have to go so fast?'

'Fast is what I do, Princess.' I eyed the turn coming, knowing exactly what I needed to do, but just hoped Violet wasn't going to freak out. 'So, have you ever watched street racing?'"

I loved watching this couple fall in love and work through struggles and family dynamics. I look forward to what is to come for Luke and Violet and Luke's other brothers!

Review by Anne Milne

Violet meets Frankie at the local library where she works and they bond through their love of books and grow closer due to their shared experiences. Then she meets Luke her brother and guardian and they don't get on at all, he mistakes the quiet and reserved Violet as stuck up and she thinks he's a brash loudmouth idiot which to be fair he was at first. Violet is such a sweetheart, she's been quite a loner most of her life. Luke is the opposite he's loud, speaks before he thinks and lives life on the edge. I loved how he quickly realizes what he'd found in Violet, she's patient, supportive, and tender. I loved how Violet has not only Luke and Frankie in her life, but she got Leelee and the other brothers as well. Can't wait to read more from this series.

EXCERPT

Before we leave for my parents’ house in Dan’s rental car, a tumbleweed rolls by . . . actually, no, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one did. Seems rather fitting. Instead, Dan insists we stop at a flower stand a few blocks from my apartment. I can only hope my mother appreciates his thoughtfulness.

An hour or so later, Dan and I pull up to my parents’ lovely home—a large, white colonial style house, on a quiet street in a quiet New England town. For many, this would be a dream home, and it was that for me as a child . . . until I realized I was attached by strings—long, intrusive strings that have been painful to cut.

“Everyone’s already here,” I say, groaning on the inside at the sight of my brothers’ cars as we get out of the car.

Dan grabs my hand and kisses it. “Deep breath.” He breathes with me. “It’s going to be fine.”

I grimace. “Hope so.” We walk to the door. I’m holding the birthday gift for my niece, and Dan’s got the stunning bouquet of pink and purple flowers he bought. I’m just about to turn the knob when the door swings open.

“Hi, Claire! Happy birthday!” Lindsay says, looking right past me at Dan. Lindsay, my tall, dark-haired, brown-eyed, sister-in-law holds her hand out to Dan. Her eyes widen measurably. “Oh my God, you’re Daniel Chase.” She pauses and blinks. “Um, I’m Lindsay, Claire’s sister-in-law. Your mom said ‘Dan’ was coming, but did not clarify that with ‘Daniel Chase.’ Oh Jesus.”

*The Sisterhood Review Bundle* THE FIRST TASTE by Jessica Hawkins @jess_hawk

THE FIRST TASTE
by Jessica Hawkins

BLURB
Andrew Beckwith has already devoted his life to one girl—and as far as he’s concerned, she’s all he needs. The rough-around-the-edges bad boy left his reckless ways behind six years ago when his daughter Bell was born. To the female population’s dismay, he’s unapologetically single. When Bell’s mother walked out on them years ago, he vowed never to let another woman close enough to hurt them again.

Amelia Van Ecken isn’t just another woman. She’s an independent, smart, and savvy businesswoman who doesn’t have time for sex, much less love. In the midst of a drawn-out, bitter divorce, all she wants is to bury herself in work. But when sharp-tongued Amelia and stubborn Andrew cross paths, sparks fly—and burn. Two things are obvious in an instant: they want each other, and they’re from different worlds. It’s the perfect formula for an off-the-charts one-night stand. After all, it’s not as if opposites ever attract.

The First Taste, a standalone spin-off of the Slip of the Tongue.

This book intrigued me from the blurb. A single dad who takes on the role of both parents. And a workaholic woman who also knows how it feels to be betrayed. I read this as a stand-alone and I loved it. I will go back and read the first book because her writing is excellent. Andrew and Amelia are a hot dynamic duo. They instantly have an attraction that they both try to fight. Once they have their first taste, by accident. They can't stop themselves from having many more firsts. They are extremely hot and steamy from the start, while mixing real life emotions into it. Will they be able to walk away after such an amazing one night stand? You must read to find out. No spoilers here. I will definitely be reading more from this author. Her writing was smooth and charming. You are hooked from the start and can't put it down.

Warning....this review may contain some spoilers. Read with caution. Oh, and you might want to go take a bath after you finish reading.

We first met Andrew Beckwith in Slip of the Tongue. If you have read it, although not necessary, you know that he is Sadie's brother. (If not, you need to go one click and read it ASAP!) Did I mention that he is HOT and a super awesome single dad? His daughter is Bell and Bell's mom, Shana, left them right before Bell turned three. She didn't even leave a goodbye note. Andrew came to terms with it and became the best dad he could be. He should totally get dad of the year. Bell is the Apple of her father's eye. He always puts her first. So much so that he doesn't make himself available for love. Andrew runs an auto shop in New Jersey. He has a tight-knit group of friends that are more like family. They look after him and Bell.

Anyway, enough background. One day when Andrew takes Bell into New York to his sister Sadie's office for a weekend visit he gets mistaken for the plumber by Sadie's boss, Amelia. Since the plumber hasn't shown, he goes ahead and fixes the toilet. That is just the kind of guy Andrew is. So with Bell at Sadie's what is Andrew to do with himself all weekend. Does he stay in the city or go back home to Jersey.

Of course, Andrew stays in New York City and guess who he runs into? Amelia. That's right, Sadie's snooty boss who has no tolerance for children. They hit it off as best as you can imagine and agree to a night of adult fun and beverages. The weekend ends and Andrew and Bell go back to Jersey. Amelia and Andrew have made quite the impression on each other. Amelia is also going through a long and drawn out divorce. So between running her business and her divorce, she isn't making herself available for dating either. So as the book goes on they keep running into each other. Can Andrew cause Amelia to let her guard down long enough to let him and Bell in or will they go their separate ways? You will have to read the book to find out how Andrew and Amelia's story plays out.

Anne Milne

I was anxious to see if this one match how much I loved the first book, the answer is a big fat yes it actually exceeded it in my opinion.
Andrew is Sadies's brother, he's a single dad to Bell who is the cutest kid, it's just the two of them and they are devoted to each other. He drops her off and his sisters work and the fun begins when he meets Amelia her boss. You will think she is stuck up when you meet her, she's serious, a bit patronizing but you can feel the tension between them. Andrew is everything I look for in a bbf, he's a very dirty talker a total alpha but he's protective, determined and very sexy. Amelia who is an independent woman might just have met a man who can give it just as much as her. There are several stories running through the book that keeps you invested in finding out what's going to happen next, it's angsty and drama filled but very easy to follow the plot of the book.

Her eyes close. The poor thing; she’s exhausted. For some reason, I get the sense it isn’t just because of our sexual activities. She did seem stressed before….

“Hop in the shower with me?” I suggest, stroking her hair back from her face.

She opens her eyes, and suspicion is evident. “A shower?”

“Yeah.” I grin with a shrug. “The act of being underneath a spray of water used to clean oneself?”

“Smart-arse,” she grunts with a smile. “Um… Okay.”

Charlie sits up and takes my offered hand. I lead the way and get the hot water started. She seems timid; maybe she isn’t used to too much interaction with a guy after the sex is over. Mind you, I don’t usually make a habit of dragging these things out. But Charlie is different. The attraction I have for her is completely new for me. Without even knowing her at all, there is still a sense of connection. At least, for me there is.

I was born in Canada, Montreal, and have lived in Australia since I was three years old. When I finished high school I studied – and received a Diploma – in Law Enforcement. Now, I’ve been working for over five years as a pharmacy assistant. When I’m not working or spending time with family and friends, you will find me either curled up with a book or writing one of my own.
