When Jessica Altenbury can no longer afford to live in London she has no choice but to move back to her family home of Altenchester. It's not just her family that wait there for her though, as she is forced to face her past and the life she ran from.

Trying to put her old life behind her, all Jess wants is to help others, the way she wishes someone had been there to help her when she'd needed it. However her parents, and someone from her past she'd rather forget, have other plans for her.

If that wasn't enough, she begins to suffer from visions of disturbing events she can't explain. Visions that push her to spend time with the last man she wants to, Rob, her brother's best friend.

Robert Morgan knows what it's like to lose faith in those you should be able to trust. As he and Jess get to know each other his protective instincts kick in, but will Jess let him behind the walls she has built around her heart?

He believes her visions are the key to the mysterious attacks that almost killed her brother, but can Rob convince Jess of that, as well as protect her from events neither of them understand?

Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the gate and strode up the path to knock on the front door.

It opened to reveal Jess in her pyjamas. Rob’s gaze dropped to her cleavage, on show from the tight, low-cut top she was wearing, before she wrapped a dressing gown across her chest. Her black hair curled around her face and stuck out in all directions. Dark, long lashes only emphasised her pale skin, as did the dark circles under her eyes. The smile on her face was gone, replaced by a cool look.

"I thought you were Emma and had forgotten your keys again. If you're looking for Matt, he's not here."

He grinned at her; he couldn't help it, remembering how she'd been that night. Okay, so she had been drunk, but she had still kissed him, even giggled at him. But every time they were alone, she became this ice queen, except he knew it was fake. He just didn't know why yet.

"Hi, Jess. I'm good, thanks for asking. How are you?" She didn't answer him unless he counted the face she pulled at him. "I'm not looking for Matt, I know, he's not here.”

synopsis

The depths of his soul are as black as his eyes.
He’s a thief and a murderer.  Add kidnapping to the list now that he’s taken me, forced me away from my father’s house in the middle of the night.  There’s no room for mercy in his dead heart.  He’s driven by purpose, and I keep messing up his plans.  So he hates me.  He punishes me.  He’s my captor, and there’s nothing I can do to change that. But then he’s forced to make a decision—keep me or let someone else have me? He’s still my captor, but also a kind of savior now too. Somehow things have changed between us.  I can see it in his eyes.  He doesn’t like it, but he can’t stop the motion from going forward.  He wants me in a different way, and it’s killing him to give in to his desires.  I’m beginning to see that sometimes even a dead heart, even one belonging to Creed, can be revived.

* Book Blitz * SMOKE AND MIRRORS by Jess Haines @XpressoTours @Jess_Haines #Giveaway

Smoke and Mirrors
Jess Haines
(Blackhollow Academy #1)
Publication date: May 1st 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she’s just like all the other magi.
A dragon who sees through her lies.
Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.
Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she’s got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can’t afford at her part time job in a café, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.
The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.
As an illusionist, she doesn’t have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduates—and legendary treasure hoards are an added bonus—she thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems…
Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight.

EXCERPT:

Viper made a soft hissing sound of irritation between his teeth, pulling back from her. “Cormac has no vision. I know what I want and I’m prepared to offer anything to get it. You have but to ask.”
Well. There was one thing. Her cheeks flared crimson and she squirmed a bit before stuttering out another question, swallowing back her embarrassment.
“You keep a hoard like a dragon, right? I don’t suppose you would consider loaning me a little? I swear I’d pay it back.”
His head tipped to one side, and he looked her up and down anew. She suspected he was just noticing her frayed cuffs and cheap shoes. He’d been so intent on getting whatever it was he wanted out of her that he hadn’t paid attention to the package it came in until now. When she caught the very slight curl of his lip, there and gone in a flash, embarrassed heat filled her cheeks.
Feeling both dirty and humiliated, she ducked her head. “Never mind. I shouldn’t have asked. I’m sorry, I don’t think I can do this.”
“Come now, I’m sure it’s not that hard. All it takes is a yes.”
“No,” she said, this time with a bit more vehemence. Cormac was right. There was something off about Viper, and never mind what a perfect ass she’d just made of herself. Worst of all, that flash of disgust showed he obviously had no respect for her. At least Cormac never made her feel tolerated. “Thank you for the offer, but I’ll find some other way of getting what I need.”
He slowly rose to stand, heaving a sigh as he settled back on his heels.
“That’s unfortunate. This would have been much easier if you had agreed.”
Kimberly would have asked what he meant by that, but the look in his eyes froze her in place.
His eyes burned a molten gold as he spread his arms, which were expanding and shifting at an alarming rate. Faster than she might have thought possible, he was growing, his clothing melting and skin disappearing under a layer of metallic scales. Nearby, people were noticing, shouting and screaming in fear as they stampeded in every direction to escape the shapechanging Other in their midst.
When he ceased growing, from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, he was over thirty feet long, with a wingspan half again that size.
Kimberly sat immobile, unable to so much as squeak in terror as the beast before her lurched back to arch its neck and spread its wings, barbed tail lashing as it growled at her. One thick, talon-tipped paw lashed out, flattening her on the grass and squeezing the air out of her lungs. It gave an awkward, one-legged hop forward to catch its balance before clenching its claws to dig deep furrows in the grass and close around her waist and legs, pinning her.
Then those wide, ribbed wings began to flap, the sun playing off the tones of brass and copper and gold. The ground fell away, people scattering before the airborne monster.
And Kimberly could do nothing but pray, staring up at this great beast that had her in its claws.
She’d gotten what she’d asked for. Now she would have to pay the price.

 Excerpt:

What he really wanted to hear were the other words, the words I couldn’t give. He’d danced around it, too, though. He’d suggested he loved me, but he’d never told me outright. Those words stood so prominently that they’d become a barrier between us. Either they’d been a lie, a cruel response to my scheming, or they’d been truthful—a possible doorway leading to something else. Something more. Damn, how I wanted the more. Wanted it enough to brave broaching the subject. “You said things the other night, Reeve—” He jumped in, turning his head to meet my eyes straight on. “I meant them.” “Oh.” Oh. There was so much to say in response and yet nothing at all came to mind. And as wary as I was to fully trust him, I believed him. Many men had proclaimed their love for me—usually when I had my mouth around their dick—but it had never been sincere. The plethora of false variations had been enough to teach me that this version was the real thing. But Reeve had said he’d loved Amber that night as well. And I believed that too. “I want you sleeping in my bed, Emily.” Or perhaps I was wrong about everything, and his devotion was tied up in sex like all the other men I’d known. I considered retorting back something sassy about not always being able to get what you want. But I wasn’t quite sure that was an adage that Reeve understood. Besides, I wanted to be sleeping in his bed as well, and maybe I would be eventually. If it was really where he wanted me. If I was really the one he wanted there. I knew I should just ask—how do you feel about Amber now? What happens next between us? It was on the tip of my tongue, the questions preformed in my mouth when I decided to swallow them instead. Because I wasn’t sure I was ready to hear those answers—whatever they may be—and, in this moment, at least, I was what he desired. And maybe it was just an excuse to not have to think about her for a minute, to not worry about feeling guilty or like I’d betrayed her. As long as I didn’t know, I could blame my behavior on ignorance, and I could please him too. The swing rocked as I shifted to my knees. Ignoring the chill of the seat against my bare shins, I leaned forward and unfastened Reeve’s jeans. “This isn’t my bed,” he said, not moving to either help me or stop me. “It’s the best I can do right now.” He’d gone commando, a sign that he’d likely tried to sleep as well, then had thrown his clothing on when he found the effort futile. I rubbed my hands together, heating them with friction before I reached in for his cock. Just as I lowered my lips to his tip, he said, “That ‘right now’ insinuates that there will be a time that you can do more.” I didn’t want to answer, afraid of giving too much of myself away. Afraid that he wouldn’t like my reasons for not being with him fully or that he’d try to talk me out of worrying about Amber’s place in all of this. So I occupied my mouth in other ways that prevented talking.

Review: Sweet Jayne by K Webster @KristiWebster

Sweet Jayne by K. Webster
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sweet Jayne. I had no idea what to expect when I fired up this book on my kindle. Aside from the obvious... It's a K-freaking-Webster book! So yeah, I knew it would be spectacular. She's like the princess of dark and nasty...but like, dipped and coated in a cute and innocent shell! LOL ...but I digress. This was one of the more twisted, keep-you-guessing books I've read to date. Just when I begin to think that I can guess what is going on, something happens to wipe that thought away. I found myself saying, "what the actual fuck?" to myself I don't know how many times. For me, this is a good thing! Now on to the review.

Our heroine is a STRONG one. Nadia Jayne moves to the states from Argentina when her mother marries a wealthy man. Leaving her friends in her last year of high school to live in another country was not something she was happy about, but she was happy for her mother. Her new stepfather was another story altogether. She couldn't stand him. She could barely put up with his possessiveness and ego as he waltzed around town showing them off. What really got to her was the way he looked at her almost hungrily... He always seemed to be checking her out, hugging a bit too long, threatening to spank her if she was a bad girl. She was going to college soon though, so she only had to tolerate him for a few more months.

Our Hero. Who is our hero in this tale?... Maybe I won't tell you... let you guess... Mwahahahaha!

Donovan Jayne is Nadia's stepfather. He is stunningly gorgeous. He's tall and authoritative, but he has a very gentle side for Nadia. Everything around him ceases to exist when he is with her. She is his world. It is obvious that he will do anything for her, but how far will he push at the edges of acceptable behavior? Has her mother noticed anything odd in his behavior toward her?

When a traumatic kidnapping of Nadia's friend, Kasey, happens right before her eyes one morning all of Nadia Jayne's future plans change focus. She begins putting all of her energy into finding her friend with the unexpected help of her stepfather. They work as a team following leads and offering information to the police department in efforts to help find her friend. Almost ten years later, she still plans to never give up looking for her friend and will go to great lengths to do so.

Kasper, Kasey's brother, is filled with pure unadulterated hate for Nadia. He places the blame for his sister's abduction on Nadia. She should have been able to stop it or offer more information describing the abductor or his vehicle. She's holding back information. She's a stupid spoiled bitch. He constantly plots to avenge his sister and make Nadia, with her "perfect rich-girl life," pay for all that Kasey had lost.
There is only one problem.... . . . Nadia has been off the radar for three years and he can't find her anywhere.

Who has her? What has happened over the past three years? You will guess several times over and not truly be sure. This is a wild and crazy-ass ride that K puts us on! All buckled in tight, popcorn and a Jack and Coke at the ready! Maybe two! The level of deviant sexual punishment topped all of the scenes from any author I've read to date. If you've read this book, you know the scene!

The overall feel of this book is spectacular. There are limitless emotions throughout. The hopes and desperation. The horrors and solace. The scheming and wondering. The taboo and the perfect fit. The violence and the soothing. Up and down on the rollercoaster ride.... I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

Interior designer Carrie Newman could not have envisioned a more perfect life for herself. Determined to make a new start, Carrie leaves Texas and heads to Palm Beach to pick up the pieces of her shattered and broken life. The last thing she expects is to find herself attracted to her first client at her new job—Brad Larson, who has proven himself time and time again to be cad. excerpt

“Carrie Newman?” he asked in an über-sexy Australian accent. Her toes curled at the sound of his voice. He reached out his hand and said, “I’m Oliver. Jane sent me over to help you unpack your boxes.” Whether it was the Florida sun or the handsome man who stood in front of her that hit her like a heat wave, she blinked a few times more, and shook his masculine hand. “Thank you for coming, but I can manage. There are only a few of them anyway.” She pointed to her tightly packed car. “I don’t mind.” Oliver smiled and clasped his hands, his voice sounding eager and more than ready to help. I certainly could use your help in more ways than one, she thought to herself, calculating that it had been quite a while since she’d last had sex, which was way too long in her opinion. Shaking naughty thoughts away, Carrie regained her composure. “Thank you. I’d certainly appreciate your assistance.” She turned toward her car and pressed the unlock button, and then he took the lead. Between telling him which room to put the boxes in and passing one another between entranceways, Carrie tried to ignore Oliver’s flirtatious smile and the dimples indented in his cheeks. Finally, they unpacked the last two boxes from the car, leading them to meet in the kitchen. “Is there anything else I can help you with?” “No, but thank you for coming.” She observed sweat beading the sides of his forehead. “Can I get you some water? I think I have another bottle in the cooler.” She pointed to the cooler Sara had packed for her. He wiped the sweat off with his forearm. “No, I’m okay. Thanks, though.” “Okay.” She looked around her kitchen and awkward silence filled the room. “Would you like to come to Nick & Johnnie’s tonight? I’m working as a bartender there, and I’d love to buy you a drink.” Carrie blushed and bowed her head. “I’d love to, but I’m kind of tired,” she lied as his face turned somber. “But maybe soon,” she added, giving him a polite grin. Oliver beamed. “Wonderful! I look forward to seeing you again.” With one last glance in her direction, he reached into his wallet, pulled out a card, and handed it to her. “Call me if you need anything else. I work full time for Moving Waves, but call anytime—even if you need a handyman—I do it all.” She wanted to say, “I’m sure you do,” but kept quiet. Shaking her head once again at the dirty thoughts that swam back into her mind, she took his card and smiled at him. “You’ll be hearing from me if I need anything.” She followed him out the door and watched him get into the truck. “Goodbye,” he said after rolling down the window. “Bye,” Carrie said quietly as she waved her hand in the warm air.
