Dane James worked my stepfather’s fields. He was the boy next door.

Strong.
Hardworking.
Forbidden.

From the moment we met, we were star-crossed lovers—always wanting, never having. We loved each other for most of our lives, but right from the beginning destiny had other plans.  She knew we would fall in love.  She knew we would fall apart.  Over and over again, like the curse of a recurring nightmare.  Or the hope of a familiar dream.

Our past was tumultuous.  Our future was bleak.  But the one thing we always had was the beautiful now.

Until that was taken from us, too.

** possible spoilers **
The future is uncertain, live in the beautiful now! Some people search their whole lives to find their one true love, but for Dane and Brinkley they found it at the tender age of 12. Their love was forbidden and their story was brought forth with the beautiful angst typically found in a young adult genre and the heart-wrenching love and loss brought by romance novels. I have read nearly everything written by M. Leighton and this will by far enter into the top one or two. This book moved quickly and was paced with flashbacks and present day events that created a comfortable momentum that helped to drive the storyline and the reader's curiosity. I laughed, I cried, I was angry at the injustice these two suffered from being born into different classes in a community where that was all that mattered. The most beautiful part of this story is that no matter what was thrown at them, and no matter how many decades passed or problems were thrown their way, their love was always at the forefront of their minds. I loved the beautiful way the conclusion came about and I am a sucker for a happy ending. This is a must read!

This was an incredible story about the struggles of growing up in a close-minded town, young love, and the angst of two people unable to be together.
Michelle writes in such a way that I really felt like I knew these characters and it was so easy to visualize them and "see" their personalities and relationships with each other. This was an emotional story and as a "tough nut to crack," I found myself tearing up at unexpected times from all different types of feels.
I don't want to say too much about the plot, because I like to let the story tell itself (I personally love going into a book blindly), so I will just say that this was the first book I read of M. Leighton's, but it certainly will not be my last! I can't wait to read more of her work!
