Review by Anne Milne
There are a few authors giving fairy takes their own spin in books just now, but for me, no one does it better than Katy.
This is simply beautiful, the characters, the setting, the story, but mostly the writing. Katy writes in such a way that you feel like your there, you can smell the ocean, her words are evocative.
Laire is a fisherman's daughter who lives a sheltered life on the island of Corey. She's such a sweet girl, but very naive. Not just to the outside world, but she knows nothing about men. Erik is the sophisticated Governors son who sweeps her off her feet. I loved how gentle he was with Laire when explaining about the opposite sex. He took his time and didn't pressure her or rush her to explore their feelings for each other.
They spend a summer falling in love, but when the summer ends they are tragically torn part. When they meet up years later can they get past all the secrets, lies and past hurts to have a future - or is an HEA not in their future?

Review by Becky Rendon
I'm a sucker for fairytales, romances, and well the combination of the two is just perfect. So it's no stretch of the imagination that I jumped on board to read Don't Speak. It doesn't hurt that I am a fan of several of the authors works. But I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
In general, re-tellings make me nervous. An author is taking a much loved tale and tweaking it, changing it, molding it to their story. It can go one of two ways- utter disaster or smile inducing joy. Clearly, Katy Regnery has mastered the smile inducing joy if my face splitting grin is any indication.
Laire, a clever and sweet nod to the fairytale being portrayed, was the perfect name. Don't Speak is a beautiful tale with enough of an emotional rollercoaster to leave you breathless. Is it hard to guess which direction the story will be going? No and even so, with the foreshadowing, the warning bells going off in your head, it still hurts.
But it's better to have loved and lost...right? Not sure myself, but that's what they say. They also say time heals all wounds. Sounds like more bull...
Regardless of what you believe, Laire and her Prince had a magical romance. Ursula, the sea witch, has a pivotal role in the turning point of said romance. King Triton was not forgotten. Sebastian and Flounder were present. The inclusion of characters/friends from the story were done so well and it was a joy to see them.
It's funny. I have previously purchased the whole series and yet this is the first one I've read. Obviously, I have great taste but lousy follow through! It's my goal to read the others now that I know I will not be disappointed. I can't wait to experience my childhood favorites in a new grown up way!

A fisherman’s daughter.
The governor’s son.
Two very different worlds.

Don't Speak is a modern day retelling of my favorite children's classic, The Little Mermaid set in The Outer Banks of North Carolina. Regnery captures the authentic lingo and laid back atmosphere of coastal North Carolina. The main characters come from 2 totally different worlds and she highlights that perfectly.
Don't Speak is the story of Laire (yes that is Ariel's letters rearranged), a fisherman's daughter and Erik, the Governor of North Carolina's son. They meet when Laire makes a delivery for the family business, King Triton Seafood to Erik's parent's house for a party. Yes, there are other Little Mermaid references. Erik's mother's name is Ursula and Laire's boss at the restaurant is Mrs. Sebastian just to name a couple. Laire and Erik fall in love that summer, but are eventually ripped apart. What will happen when they find out? I'm not telling. I don't want to give anything away. You will have to read for yourself. Trust me, you will love it just as much as I did.

I think most of us girls are suckers for the fairy tales we grew up with. But as we get older we still love those stories but also want them to be more realistic and to our taste. And let me tell you this version of the little mermaid definitely lived up to my expectations. I can't wait to see her take some of my other fairytales and favorites. I don't want to repeat anything or give anything away. This is a book you want to read.
